Alfie Jurvanen, known by the stage name Bahamas, couldn’t have picked a less apt name to reflect his musical and personal background. Hailing from Toronto, the songwriter’s minimal, harmony-laden folk songs earned him praised on his 2009 album Pink Strat. Watch Bahamas’ Live From Paste session here.

In 2011, few bands have captured our attention more than Kopecky Family Band. The Nashville band wowed us back in March with a captivating performance at our Paste Party in Austin. We liked them so much that we invited the band of Kopeckys to our offices over the summer to do a Live From Paste session. Watch the group perform four songs here.

Live From Paste: Ivan & Alyosha

Video By Irina Dvalidze, Renée Reizman.Text By Max Blau. Audio by Chris Humphries

Ivan & Alyosha makes music perfect for a Sunday morning soundtrack. The folk-rock quartet combines impressive harmonies with a rich, easygoing sound that echoes in similar fashion to fellow Seattle natives The Head and The Heart. While originally scheduled for a Sunday morning session, we ended up filming and recording this one on a Monday morning—a decision that came as a pleasant surprise to those around the Pasteoffice who were both familiar and unfamiliar with the group.

Watch Ivan & Aloysha perform five songs, including their impressive single “Glorify” and several other tracks from their recently released Fathers Be Kind EP.

You all know the drill with SXSW. Between the official showcases and the unofficial day parties, thousands of bands head down to Austin, Texas every year for the weeklong festival hoping to be heard, seen and remembered. For attendees, it’s music overload—you may see 20 or 30 acts over the span of several days. I saw 100 acts this year at SXSW. In doing so, each band increasingly blurred together with those that came before and after. Three months later, it’s difficult to name each band I saw. There’s a few bands, however, that catch you off guard just enough that you can’t forget them. MyNameIsJohnMichael was one of those groups.

Like their name, which includes five words packed into one single-word title, this New Orleans-based rock ensemble packs a punch that can’t be ignored. Carrying the name of frontman John Michael Rouchell, this seven-piece outfit combines a vibrant blend of indie-rock infectious and a Louisiana-inspired brass bombast that speaks to their local roots. Check out five songs from MyNameIsJohnMichael, including a Cajun-laced cover of Cults’ “Go Outside.”

As Ohioan folk rock outfit Over The Rhine continues to tour in support of their latest record The Long Surrender, the husband and wife duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist recently made their way through Atlanta to perform at the Variety Playhouse. Paste stopped by before their set to record and film their soundcheck. Watch Over The Rhine perform three songs in the player below.

Day one of Bonnaroo proved to be quite interesting when we got on the Ferris wheel with Abigail Washburn. Known for her interesting and expletive-laden stories, she offered us an account of her experiences at a United Kingdom airport involving a Filipino restaurant employee, an interestingly-named hamburger and her first encounter with Angry Birds. Check out our time with her below.

After kicking off day two at Bonnaroo with her performance, Sharon Van Etten took some time out of her afternoon to chat with Paste. Check her out the video below as she speaks about her first Bonnaroo experience, working with Aaron Dessner and how Leonard Cohen inspired one of her newest songs.

Cuse has lots of notable alums, but very few, other than the dude that wrote (500) Days of Summer, have as much indie cred with campus “hipsters” as Pete Yorn. So in case you let the grand blizzard of March 6th, better known as the snow storm to cause University Administration to cave and cancel class for the first time in 15 years, worry not. As always Jerk was there to bring you front row coverage.
Yorn covered a lot of his older pieces, some may argue his best, as well as few tracks from his latest self-titled release. Turns out he drew a large chunk of inspiration from his time at cuse. Yorn admitted that he must have gotten so involved in music, because he had to spend most of his time snowed in practicing, which may explain how this Communications and Rhetorical Studies major ended up in California

BEN GIBBARD AND JAY FARRAR SOUNDTRACK KEROUAC’S BIG SUR

Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar Soundtrack Documentary One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur.

PREVIEW: Download Death Cab for Cutie’s “Summer Skin” MP3
WATCH: Video below the jump

We all know that Ben Gibbard has incomparable musical talent. Be it his work withDeath Cab for Cutie, or side projects like Postal Service that get us permanently addicted, it appears he can do no wrong. Gibbard has cited Jack Kerouac as a major influence on his work before and has now found a perfect outlet to pay his dues.

What started out as a small collaboration with Jay Farrar of Son Volt — in 2007 for upcoming Jack Kerouac documentary One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur— has escalated into a full-length soundtrack of the same title. The album will accompany the DVD release in a special edition, aside from individual release.

With this project, Farrar and Gibbard directly tap into the heart of Kerouac’s work — taking the eerie, lingering lyrics straight off the pages of Big Sur (1962) — and merging them with folky acoustic melodies. Aside from creating the music, the duo also appear in the film. The film includes quite an assortment of artists (film and music), who have been influenced by Kerouac. Tom WaitsSam ShepardRobert Hunter of the Grateful DeadPatti Smith and even Amber Tamblyn (yes, even the girl from the Traveling Pants movie), just to name a few.

One Fast Move or I’m Gone drops on Oct. 20, the same day as the documentary, marking the 40th anniversary of Kerouac’s death on 21.
